Mountains and Walking Trails

Mount Lady MacDonald rises majestically over the Benchlands. Residents enjoy hiking and biking the many trails and enjoying the unforgettable mountain landscape. Some of Canmore’s most well-known trails wind through the Benchlands.

Montane Traverse offers a thrilling trip for more experienced bikers. The trail rises from Cougar Creek and ascends past the Silvertip Golf Course. An easier ride awaits on the Horseshoe Loop multi-use trail, where hikers, walkers, and horseback riders also move through the picturesque natural setting. Bird-watching and wildlife-spotting is possible on Horseshoe Loop, but hikers should be cautious of bears and cougars.

Cougar Creek features a large drainage area caused by a flood in 2013. It’s impressive to hike next to the small creek and see evidence of how powerful it once was! The Cougar Creek trails are also noted for beautiful wildflowers, making it a great hike for photographers in the spring and summer.

If you need to improve your skills before heading up the mountain, look no further than the Benchlands Trail Bike Skills Park. The park offers dirt jumps, rock skinnies, and other features to help you train your mountain biking skills. Both beginners and more experienced riders will appreciate the skills park in Benchlands.

Schools and Playgrounds

Benchlands Trail leads across the highway, making your home only minutes from downtown. You’re only a short drive from Bow Valley College and Lawrence Grassi Middle School. To the south, you’ll find the Elizabeth Rummel kindergarten and elementary school just across the trail.

Winter sports are a big element of Canmore life, and you’re never too young to start! Benchlands sits next to the best tobogganing site in the city at Cemetery Hill. The newer Eagle Terrace Sports Field has a playground as well as a field that can be rented for soccer, rugby, or ultimate frisbee.

Just south of Benchlands Trail you’ll find the Cougar Creek Skating Rink, where kids of all ages can enjoy skating. You can sign up the littles for lessons or find a hockey league for older kids. Family skating is a great way to have fun and build memories!

Amenities

Benchlands is a small neighbourhood, but its location gives it easy access to downtown and all of Canmore’s amenities. Closer to home, the Benchlands Trail connects several delicious local restaurants.
